The One-Step KVO System is a simple to use, cost effective
alternative to catheter flushing. The elastomeric pump is filled with
normal saline and provides continuous infusion at a flow rate of 0.5 ml/hr
for up to 7 days. The Features & Benefits
Product Information One-Step KVO Case Study #1 RB, a 74 year old male with a long history of congestive heart failure (CHF) was admitted in order to rule out Cerebral Vascular Accident (CVA), and had a gram positive infection of a Decubitus Ulcer, Stage III. On admission, the patient moved into the acute care unit for supportive care with observation for the CVA. A long-term course of IV vancomycin therapy was proposed for the decubitis. While in the acute care unit, a single lumen PICC line was inserted. After insertion of the PICC line, a One-Step KVP device was attached. The patient was moved to the ICU for 2 days due to the hypotensive episodes and close observation due to the age and severity of the CHF. The patient was moved from the ICU to a step down unit, where he spent 2 weeks in the acute observation unit and recovered well enough to be discharged. The patient was maintained on the course of IV antibiotics for 40 days, and the One-Step KVO device was used to maintain catheter patency, which ran well in spite of numerous logistical challenges; including multiple moves throughout the hospital, on and off mechanical ventilation, laboratory draws, and other drugs and activities. The IV line was used for antibiotics, hydration, dopamine, and other supportive drugs throughout the hospitalization. The One-Step KVO was changed per hospital policy. Evaluation: The patient was able to maintain PICC line patency for 40 days while being treated for multiple problems while in a number of hospital units. Case study provided by Jean Heath BSN, OCN and Sarah Jones BSN, OCN of Troy, OH. One-Step KVO Case Study #2 CW, a 21 year old male with a recurrent Neurofibrosarcoma, was admitted for the placement of a PICC line and for a course of multi-drug chemotherapy. This patient previously had an implanted double-lumen port on the left side. The patient had an initial tumor reductive surgery performed while a child, which left some anatomical abnormalities. When the patient developed the recurrence, the port was placed, but clotted off after a short time. A double lumen PICC line was placed the right arm and a One-Step KVO device was attached to each lumen. The patient was initially therapeutically anticoagulated with continuous heparin therapy. The patient was given a course of Doxorubicin and Ifex + Mesna chemotherapy and discharged to hospice and Home Health Services. This patient was later readmitted for a second, and later, a third course of chemotherapy without any problems. At that time the PICC line was infusing well and without problems. The patient continues to be followed by Home Health when not in the hospital. The One-Step KVO device is still attached to each lumen and working well. The devices are changed per IV therapy policies. Evaluation: At the time of this case study, the patient has been using the One-Step KVO on both lumens of PICC line for 7 days and has reported no problems with catheter patency. The patient will soon be traveling across the state for major surgery. Case study provided by Jean Heath BSN, OCN and Sarah Jones BSN, OCN of
